About Our Logo
When I was trying to come up with a logo for Breath Runner, I wanted something simple, bold, and comforting. Of course it had to be representative of both breathing and running, but more than just that, it needed to speak to my ethos; it needed to embody my desire to introduce people to a whole new, exciting and healthy lifestyle that has the power to promote balance and harmony in all facets of their life.
I had a basis from which to start. I had already designed the logo for my triathlon coaching business, AquaTerra Coaching, LLC. But I didn’t want to totally replicate that design. Breath Runner needed to stand on its own.
I started with a bold typeface, one where I could capitalize the first letter and add some sort of design element into it without totally distorting the letter itself. The image of lungs and a runner had been floating around in the back of my mind for a bit, but I couldn’t think of how they could fit in, until I happen to lay my phone down after searching for graphic images of lungs for ideas. As I stood up, the lung images displayed appeared sideways, and they resembled a fancy-font letter B. Bingo! Just as instantly, the image of a runner inside of the R popped into my mind. Then it was just a matter of drawing them in my graphic art program and arranging things in a visually pleasing way.
Making the B and the R oversized as compared to the other letters just made sense to me, and staggering them so that they were slightly intertwined gave it the feeling of connectedness that I wanted. To me, the color blue confers a sense of open skies and cool weather, which are perfect for running. I added in the tagline “It’s Like Running On Air” to reinforce that feeling. Keeping the design at two colors, dark blue and light blue, helped keep to the theme of simplicity, which is a core concept of Breath Running.
I was pretty happy with the overall design, but when I showed it to my son, he remarked that there was nothing with this design connecting it back to AquaTerra Coaching. He thought that that sense of connection was important. I went back to my AquaTerra Coaching logo, and it was immediately apparent that the Triquetra with waves needed to come over. Changing the colors to the dark blue/light blue theme was natural and created the exact right sense of balance to the image when I placed it off to the right. This combination gave the overall design the kind of foundation that I though it should have: simple, airy and comforting.
As I go forth and attempt to enrich people's lives with the amazing adventure that is the running lifestyle, I will always strive to enable harmony, balance and love in all aspects of my coaching. It is my sincere hope that you find your journey as fulfilling and purposeful as I have!
I hope you enjoyed this explanation of the origins of my logo design. I felt its significance and my intentions in creating it were important to share.
